Proven Wisdom in Birth and Mothering

Natural births were unheard of back in the 60′s. A drug called “Twilight” was given to mothers in labor, and all mothers labored at the nearest hospital. The stress of being birthed by a mother unable to push effectively (because of the drugs) resulted in most babies being born blue.

Breastfeeding was a taboo at that time as well. It was thought that the only people to even consider nursing babies were dumb, backwoods people. A nurse told me that it was vulgar to put a baby to your breast to nurse. ‘You can’t know whether or not the baby is getting enough milk because you can’t measure breastmilk’ claimed the doctors. ‘Since you cannot measure breast milk, it is dangerous to nurse.’ ‘Babies go hungry when they are breastfed.’

In order to assure proper nutrition, these same doctors said you needed to feed babies according to their proven medical recommendations. Babies grew fat on doctor-recommended home-made formula of pasteurized milk highly sweetened with Karo Syrup. At that time baby commercial formula or disposable diapers were still not invented.

Nature and medicine had parted ways. Women began to ask their doctors questions.

The year was 1973, and I joined the ranks of those women trying to find our way back to motherhood as God intended it. I began to ask questions. A doctor pooh-poohed me. I was treated as though I was dumb by the doctor. In the face of his arrogance, I stiffened with a certainty born of an ancient mother-knowing. I informed that doctor that there was nothing he could do to stop me from having my baby at home, including calling Child Protection Workers. If I had to, I would hide to have my baby, AND I would nurse her no matter what he thought.

My solitary experience did not turn the course of birthing options for women. Many voices are required for real change. _ Such change requires a widespread outcry. The women of the 60′s took matters into their own hands and started writing books on how to have a natural birth, how to nurse, and how to bond with babies instead of sending them off to a nursery. Homeschooling was born in that moving, changing environment. Since that time there have been hundreds, maybe thousands of books written concerning these subjects but it was the pioneers who blazed the trails that wrote with a passion birthed from their struggles, and even rebellion. It was this same passion that made young mamas jump up and scream, “Yes I CAN!”

It is because of those women who weren’t afraid to share their information that we no longer expect that mothers have no memory of the first moments of their baby’s life — and that baby shouldn’t be born blue. A doctor would be laughed out of his clinic if he told a mother it was vulgar and unsafe to nurse her baby. These first home-birthed, breast fed and homeschooled children are now highly educated and successful adults homeschooling their own balanced happy children. In the end when it comes to her babies, Mother knows best.

Those books gave me and other mothers valuable information about natural methods even if the author wasn’t always a believer. I was able to benefit from their willingness to share their knowledge and experiences.

Following the example of those pioneers that came before me, I have written this latest book, The Vision by Debi Pearl. The women of the 1960′s shared their passion for information, and it is my hope that in writing The Vision I have shared some of my own with those who come after me.
