Teach Your Children Well: Online Sources To Teach Children Current Events And History

Because school budgets are cut every year, it’s become incumbent on parents to expose their kids to the information they’re not getting in school. Fortunately, the Internet is full of educational materials — if you’re savvy about searching for them. And since kids are so computer literate, using the Internet for teaching is like second nature to them. I watched my four-year-old nephew navigate YouTube looking for Cape Kennedy launch videos and footage of tornadoes, so it should be a piece of cake for older kids.

There are plenty of opportunities for learning in odd places, for example, in the world of vintage art. Digital antique advertising, postcards, greeting cards, posters and other ephemera contain historical information that’s quite revealing. The following vintage images are great examples of online materials that can be used for teaching:

Travel Posters

Children can learn a lot about the world from vintage travel memorabilia. These glimpses into the past instruct not only about the destinations themselves, but how different cultures were perceived.

Historical Sailing Ships Photos and Paintings

There’s plenty of interesting information to be discovered if children study old sailing ships. From pirate and slave ships, to Orient clippers and multi-masted, ocean-going vessels, there are interesting details bound to catch any child’s imagination.

American Icon Postcards

There were quite a few postcards printed that featured American statesmen and heroines. As a matter of fact, these were all the rage. From Abe Lincoln pictures to greeting cards with images of Betsy Ross and John Adams to make-believe American heroes like Uncle Sam, the online world is filled with these vintage pictorial references. Many tell stories along with the pictures, making them bite-sized history lessons.

Spoonerisms

Spoonerisms hail from the early- to mid-20th Century, brought forth by Reverend William Spooner and made famous by Frederick Chase Taylor, a radio comedian, performing under the name Colonel Lemuel Q. Stoopnagle. These unusual versions of traditional fairy tales swap letters or sounds in unique ways. Authentic examples from Spooner himself include “a blushing crow” for “a crushing blow” and “fighting a liar” for “lighting a fire”. Besides being entertaining, these mangled mash-ups also give children the chance to play with words.

Victorian Era Fashions

Fashion isn’t necessarily frivolous or only for kids who want to go on to become fashion designers, if it reveals something about the way people used to live. Studying Victorian costumes what life was like in the 19th century century. With any luck, they’ll be able to see how lucky they are to be born at a time when they can dress comfortably!

Current Events Teaching Resources

There are also plenty of current subjects that can be studied. You just have to watch out for impartiality. As an example, many parents don’t agree with the president’s policies. But they shouldn’t let that stop them from using free Barack Obama election clipart, free President Obama photos or even political paper dolls to create lesson plans. In fact, one open-minded homeschooling mom used all three to create a tote board for her children during the presidential election. It wasn’t about her political views, it was about teaching her children the American election process. Due to her neutral presentation, her children are now better equipped to make their own decisions when it comes to politics.

Remember, children are like sponges, so you’ll want to make sure they receive balanced information. That impartiality will make a difference in their world view later in their lives. Who knows, one of them might even be president some day!
